Nitrous oxide (N2O), commonly referred to as laughing gas, is often used by dentists to provide mild sedation and anxiolysis for anxious or fearful patients. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask that is placed over the nose. It is a colourless and odourless gas that can create a relaxing sensation when inhaled. It is fast acting and the effects are completely reversible making it an ideal sedation option for short or minor procedures.
